Abstract

We studied the vibrational structure of vicinal hydrogenated Si(111) surfaces by transmission infrared spectroscopy. In particular, we investigated the bending modes of the silicon hydrides present on the terraces and at the step-edges. We find that step-induced surface stress and/or long-range dipolar interactions split the bending modes of the Si(111) terrace monohydrides into two components, parallel and perpendicular to the step-edge direction.
